In Sociology, students are encouraged to look at "social" reasons for behaviour.  Sociology is a Social Science and uses facts and figures to inform theories.  While our students do not have to carry out their own research, they learn how sociologists would plan and conduct an investigation.

The units studied are as follows:

  • Studying Society
  • Family
  • Education
  • Crime and Deviance
  • Media
  • Power

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to look at the social factors that influence behaviour, challenge stereotypes and identify cause and effect.  Through this work students are taught to analyse and evaluate different sociological theories and to write as a sociologist.

This course is of particular interest to students who are looking for a career in social care and several go on to do A level Sociology at college or sixth form.
